The miraculous recovery of rice terraces

The Ishibe Rice Terraces are located in Matsuzaki Town, Shizuoka Prefecture, at the western tip of the Izu Peninsula.
These stone-built rice terraces are rare in eastern Japan. They offer a spectacular view of Suruga Bay below, and on clear days, Mount Fuji and the Southern Alps.
In the Heisei era, 90% of the Ishibe rice terraces were abandoned and covered with thatch, but in 2000, local residents took the lead in restoring the rice fields, and a total area of 4.2 hectares, or about 370 rice terraces, was miraculously restored, and efforts are now underway to ensure a lasting connection to the future.
It has retained its shape unchanged since the late Edo period, when documents show it was destroyed by a mountain tsunami and rebuilt. The rice fields are stacked one on top of the other, and are made of strong stonework that is rare in the Kanto region, with complex, curved shapes made from traditional plasterwork.
The mountains, rice terraces, villages and the sea are all close to each other, forming a space that is like a prototype of the Japanese archipelago.
You can experience the traditional scenery that creates the culture represented by Japanese cuisine, which is made up of rice as the staple food and ingredients from the sea and mountains.
The rice terrace owner system, which was implemented in 2002, is the focus of the town's activities, including a lantern festival and a music festival, which are a great way to promote exchanges with urban areas. Many people visit the town from all over the country to sightsee and experience the area, making it a symbol of Matsuzaki Town in Nishiizu.
