The garden makes use of the topography of the southern slope of the Musashino Terrace, the spring-fed pond, and the vegetation of Musashino, and is home to a wide variety of trees and wild plants, including cedars and Japanese mokkoku trees, as well as a large number of wild birds, and its exceptional beauty in the spring and autumn foliage seasons attracts many visitors. The "Jiro Benten Pond" in the garden is one of the sources of the Nogawa River, and has been selected as one of the 57 best spring water ponds in Tokyo.
A garden within the Edo upper residence of the Mito Tokugawa family.
The first feudal lord, Yorifusa, began construction of the garden in 1629, and it was passed on to the second lord, Mitsukuni.
The Ming Dynasty retainer Shu Shunshui was appointed as a Confucian scholar, and the garden was designed with a stroll-style hill and pond and incorporates Chinese aesthetics.
This is a typical feudal lord garden from the Edo period, with a tide pond and two duck ponds. A tide pond is a pond in which seawater is introduced to change the appearance of the pond depending on the tides, and is a style that was often used in seaside gardens.
Along with Korakuen, it is the oldest surviving feudal lord's garden, and its garden style is a typical stroll-type garden centered around a shioiri pond in the Edo downtown area. The stonework is particularly beautiful, and the garden is rich in Chinese style.
The garden's name comes from the "Six Meanings of Poetry" in the ancient Chinese poetry collection "Maoshi," which is a classification of poetry consisting of Fu, Fu, Hi, Kyo, Ga, and Sho, which Ki no Tsurayuki adapted to the "Six Forms" of waka poetry.
Former Iwasaki Residence Garden
The Kyu-Iwasaki Residence Garden is a metropolitan garden located in Ikenohata 1-chome, Taito-ku, Tokyo. The building and gardens that were formerly the main residence of the Mitsubishi zaibatsu Iwasaki family were developed into a park, and the historical buildings within the garden are designated as Important Cultural Properties of Japan.
During the Bunka and Bunsei eras, when Edo townspeople culture flourished, Sawara Marizu, who made his fortune as an antique dealer, opened the garden with the cooperation of literati and artists with whom he had connections. Today, the only remaining "Edo Flower Garden" allows visitors to enjoy seasonal flower viewing. It is also famous for traditional events that have been passed down since the Edo period, such as the "Insect Listening Party," "Moon Viewing Party," and the "Hagi Festival." It enshrines Fukurokuju, one of the Sumida Seven Lucky Gods.
This garden was part of the residence of the Kuze family, feudal lords of Sekijuku, and was acquired by Yataro Iwasaki in the Meiji period. He drew water from the Sumida River and created a stroll-style garden with a pond, a hill, and dry landscape gardens. This landscaping technique was used in the gardens of feudal lords in the Edo period. It was designated a Place of Scenic Beauty by the Tokyo Metropolitan Government in 1979.
You can enjoy the former Furukawa family Western-style house, Western garden, and Japanese garden.
The Western-style building was designed by Josiah Conder, who also designed Rokumeikan and Nikolai Cathedral.
The Western Garden is also famous for its roses.
