The Ogasawara Islands have a history of being developed and settled as a supply base for whaling ships, and so they have a close relationship with whales!
Whale watching took place in Japan for the first time in 1989, after the complete ban on commercial whaling.
Since then, it has become the home of whale watching in Japan, attracting many visitors every year.
Whale watching season
Humpback whales migrate from around December to May every year, and are most often seen from February to April.
Sperm whales live in the waters off the coast of Ogasawara all year round, but they are most often seen between May and November, and can be spotted about 10km offshore from the island.
[Best time to see] Humpback whales: February to April, Sperm whales: May to November
Whale watching tours are very popular,
Try to organise a tour in advance.
※What is Gyosan?
These have long been loved by local fishermen in Ogasawara as "non-slip sandals," and are very sturdy beach sandals with a one-piece thong and sole. As they are mainly worn by people who work in the fishing industry, they are called "fishermen's sandals," or "gyosan" for short.
