What is Rikugien Garden?
Since its creation, Rikugien has been counted as one of the two great gardens of Edo along with Koishikawa Korakuen. In 1695, the fifth shogun, Tokugawa Tsunayoshi, bestowed the land in Komagome as a villa for his subordinate residence. Yanagisawa Yoshiyasu himself designed and directed the construction, digging a pond in a corner of the flat Musashino plain, building a mountain, and over the course of seven years creating a stroll-style garden with a hill and pond.
Rikugien Garden is a delicate and gentle Japanese garden that reflects Yoshiyasu's deep literary knowledge.
The garden's name comes from the "Six Elements of Poetry" from the ancient Chinese poetry collection "Maoshi," namely the classification of poems - Fu (Fu), Fu (Fu), Hi (Hi), Kyo (Kyo), Ga (Elegance), and Sho (Song) - which Ki no Tsurayuki adapted to the "Six Styles" of waka poetry.
The garden is surrounded by a forest and a large pond with an island in the middle, and the scenic beauty of Wakanoura in Kishu (present-day Wakayama Prefecture) and other famous places praised in waka poetry are reflected in the garden as 88 different landscapes.
In the Meiji era, the garden came into the possession of Yataro Iwasaki (the founder of Mitsubishi), and in 1938 it was donated to the city of Tokyo and opened to the public. On March 31, 1953, it was designated a Special Place of Scenic Beauty by the national government.
