What is Tonogayato Garden?

The "Walking Garden" skillfully utilizes the natural topography of Musashino, namely the valley formed in the cliff of the terrace. One of the highlights is the landscaping technique that completely changes the atmosphere with the bright lawn on top of the cliff and the spring-fed pond and forest below.

This place was developed as a villa for Eguchi Sadajo (later vice president of the South Manchuria Railway) from 1913 to 1921, and became the villa of the Iwasaki family of the Mitsubishi zaibatsu in 1929. A local movement to protect the garden against development plans in the 1960s was launched, and in 1974 the Tokyo Metropolitan Government purchased the garden, which was renovated and opened as a paid garden.
The name of the garden comes from the fact that this area was once called Tonogayato, Kokubunji Village.
Tonogayato Garden was designated as a national cultural property (place of scenic beauty) in September 2011.
