Fukuroda Falls is...
Fukuroda Falls is 120 meters high and 73 meters wide, and is one of the three most famous waterfalls in Japan, making it one of Ibaraki Prefecture's most famous tourist spots.
The waterfall is also known as "Yodo-no-taki" (Four-step waterfall) because the water falls in four stages down a huge rock face. One theory is that this nickname comes from the fact that when Saigyo visited the area, he praised the waterfall, saying, "You can't truly appreciate the beauty of this waterfall unless you come here once in each of the four seasons."
What is an icefall?
During the harsh winter, when the weather conditions are just right and the bitterly cold temperatures continue day after day, Fukuroda Falls transforms into a work of white ice known as a "frozen waterfall."
The entire waterfall freezes over, and the sight of giant icicles forming in layers is breathtaking.
The ice palace that covers the 120-meter-high rock wall is a spectacular miracle created by nature.
Conditions for seeing icefalls
- Temperatures below -10°C continue for several days
・Water freezes due to the cold weather every day
- Weak winds make it easy for ice to grow
・Usually peaks between late January and early February
Complete freezing occurs once every few years
The "complete freeze" of the waterfall, where it freezes over completely, is a rare phenomenon that can only be seen in years when the weather conditions are perfect.
In recent years, complete freezing has been confirmed in 2012, 2018, and 2024.
A famous waterfall that changes with the seasons, spring, summer, autumn and winter
The scenery created by the colorful nature of the four seasons, including the autumn leaves, and the majestic waterfall is beautiful and worth seeing, and Fukuroda Falls has been designated as a national scenic spot.
The vibrant early summer scenery of fresh greenery on the rock face creates a sense of tranquility even amid the roar of the waterfall, and in autumn the falls are colored by fiery red leaves.
In winter, the waterfall transforms into a work of icy art.
