Tomioka Silk Mill
Tomioka Silk Mill was established in Tomioka, Gunma Prefecture, as Japan's first full-scale mechanized silk-reeling factory. The silk-reeling plant and cocoon warehouse from when it first opened in 1872 still remain. The factory made a major contribution not only to the modernization of Japan, but also to technological innovation and exchange in the silk industry. The entire site and its surrounding area has been designated a national historic site, and the original buildings have been designated as national treasures and important cultural properties.
