Kumomi Sengen Shrine is a shrine located on Mount Eboshi, 162 meters above sea level, in Kumomi, Matsuzaki Town, Kamo District, Shizuoka Prefecture, in the southwest of the Izu Peninsula.
It is also called Kumomi Shrine or Ontake Sengen Shrine.
Among the approximately 2,000 Sengen Shrines across the country, this is a rare shrine that enshrines only Iwanagahime-no-Mikoto.
The mountain on which it is enshrined, Mount Eboshi, is also known as Mount Ontake or Mount Kumomigatake, and is an independent rocky mountain made of tuff that stands on the coast at the westernmost point of the Izu Peninsula.
Halfway up the mountain there is the worship hall and Nakamiya (female shrine), and just below the peak there is the main hall. In ancient times, this shrine was off-limits to women, and it is said that women were only allowed to enter Nakamiya.
It takes about 25 minutes on foot from National Route 136 at the foot of the mountain to reach the main shrine via two worship halls; however, the 428 stone steps along the way are extremely steep and there are places where the footing is poor. In addition, the area near the summit is constantly exposed to strong winds, so you need to be in good condition and should not wear light clothing such as high heels.
