The Niagara of the East!

What is Fukiware Falls?

Fukiware Falls is known as the "Niagara of the Orient." It is a very stimulating waterfall where you can feel the fierceness of the water spraying out of the water in a beautiful landscape. Bathing your whole body in the natural mist from the falls on a hot summer day is refreshing. People are fascinated by the famous waterfall, which changes its appearance with the seasons, from fresh greenery to autumn leaves. Take a walk around the maintained promenade and experience the nature of Tone.
After being impressed by the waterfall, head to Oigami Onsen, where you can soothe your body and mind in the high-quality hot springs.

Fukiware Valley and Fukiware Falls

The Katashina River forms a valley between the confluence with the Hiragawa River upstream and the confluence with the Kurihara River downstream. This is called the Fukiware Valley. The valley was formed by cutting into tuff and welded tuff, and the Byobu Rock stands tall on the right bank.
The riverbed is mostly flat and made of tuff, but the particularly wide areas are called Senjojiki. There are many potholes in the riverbed, which are distributed over a distance of about 1.5 km from the Fukiware Falls to Niguraishi.
The planar shape of most of the potholes is nearly circular, and they all have in common that they are elongated in a direction perpendicular to the flow of the river. The maximum size is 6 to 7 meters in the long diameter, and most are 2 to 3 meters.
Several faults cross the tuff of the riverbed, and siliceous and limestone mineral fluids seep in and settle, hardening the area about 1m on either side of the fault, creating the Byobu Rock and Shishiiwa Rock formations that protrude without being eroded. Fukiware Falls was named Fukiware Falls because the way the waterfall falls down the side of the U-shaped valley that was created along the crack of the fault makes it look as if the waterfall is blowing through the rocks.
A promenade encircling the valley, which takes about an hour to complete, was constructed in 1991. There are three observation decks along the way, each offering a different view of the valley.
