[About Zojoji Temple]
The official website of Zojoji Temple, the head temple with deep ties to the Tokugawa Shogunate.
Zojoji Temple in Shiba, Tokyo, has a history of 600 years and is popular as a temple of "lucky luck" that enshrines the secret Buddha "Black Honzon" associated with Tokugawa Ieyasu. Zojoji Temple is one of the seven main temples of the Jodo sect of Buddhism.
It was founded by the priest Yuyo Shoso as a Jodo sect orthodox fundamental nembutsu training center in Edo Kaizuka (near Hirakawacho in Chiyoda Ward today).
After that, Zojoji Temple was appointed as an imperial prayer center in 1470 (Bunmei 2), and contributed to the development of the sect as a center of Pure Land Buddhist studies in the Kanto region. Zojoji Temple from the Edo Period to the Meiji Period and the Showa Period In the mid-17th century, Zojoji Temple was a very large temple, with over 120 buildings and over 100 student dormitories with thatched roofs lined up on its vast temple grounds.
It is said that at that time, the chanting of more than 3,000 Buddhist monks echoed throughout the entire mountain.
Having survived the difficult Meiji period and war damage, Zojoji Temple finally achieved its long-cherished dream of rebuilding its main hall in 1974.
Since then, we have continued to complete the construction of various buildings. Zojoji Temple in the Heisei era and its future role In preparation for the 800th anniversary of the death of our founder, Honen Shonin, we built the Enko Daishi Hall and the School Dormitory in 2009, and the Ankokuden Hall in 2010.
After many years, the temple grounds have been renovated and the various buildings have been restored. Now is the time for Zojoji Temple to spread the teachings of Honen Shonin and strive to train monks as the main training center for Nembutsu.
We chant the Nembutsu, pray for rebirth in the Pure Land, and seek peace.
Zojoji Temple's future role will be to spread this spirit to the world.
